Here’s the twenty-second episode of Moeru! Onii-san (The Burning Wild Man) in Japanese with English subtitles, titled “The Teacher From Hell, Spartan X Appears Chapter.” This episode was originally aired on Japanese television on September 5th, 1988.
Once again, a cast member from Kimagure Orange Road make a brief cameo appearance as a background character. This time it’s Jingoro the cat. And while we’re on the subject of other manga and anime titles, in the second half of the episode, Miss Ayako Osanai pays tribute to the grandmother of all shoujo sports titles, “Attack Number 1” by uttering a certain catchphrase that is prominent in that title’s opening theme song. On top of that, there are characters who bear a very strong resemblance to Kiri Ichidou, Chie Uru and Yui Kawa of Highschool Kimengumi! as classmates of Kenichi and Yukie, but with different hair color.
The name of Kenichi’s new teacher, Spartan X, takes his name from the Japanese title of Jackie Chan’s 1984 Hong Kong action film, “Meals on Wheels” [Chinese title: 快餐車 (traditional); 快餐车 (simplified)].
I must apologize for the quality of the encode of this particular episode. When I first obtained episodes of Moeru! Onii-san back in 2004, for whatever reason I was unable to get episode 22 in the same quality as all the other episodes no matter how hard I tried. As of 2020, there has been no Blu Ray or DVD releases of Moeru! Onii-san, and this was the best I could get in order to have the whole series. This appears to be a VHS encode of the series, which did have a direct-to-rental store release in 1989. You’ll notice the trailer to episode 23 is missing, as well as the “Moeru! Onii-san Corner” segment that follows it.
