Julian Assange update - Wikileaks founder Assange was arrested On April 11th 2019, and placed in police custody in London England for 'breaching bail conditions in December 2010' Immediately before his arrest, he had been under the protection of Ecuador as a refugee, having been accorded asylum by the Government of Ecuador in 2012. He spent his seven-year asylum period in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London. In a statement the Met police said: 'The MPS had a duty to execute the warrant, on behalf of Westminster magistrates court, and was invited into the embassy by the ambassador, following the Ecuadorian government’s withdrawal of asylum'

Assange founded WikiLeaks in 2006, an international publishing organisation known for revealing w^r crimes, human rights abuses, and corruption. WikiLeaks came to international attention in 2010 when it published a series of leaks provided by Chelsea Manning. These leaks included the Collateral Murder video (April 2010), the Afghanistan w^r logs (July 2010), the Iraq w^r logs (October 2010), and CableGate (November 2010). Following the 2010 leaks, the federal government of the United States launched a criminal investigation into WikiLeaks and asked allied nations for assistance.

In November 2010, Sweden, issued an international arrest warrant for Assange, following questioning of him months earlier over allegations of s@xual assault and r^pe. Assange denied the allegations, and said that they were just a pretext for him to be extradited from Sweden to the United States because of his role in publishing secret American documents. Swedish prosecutors later suspended their investigation and applied to revoke the European arrest warrant in May 2017.

Assange surrendered to UK police on 7 December 2010 but was released on bail within 10 days. Having been unsuccessful in his challenge to the extradition proceedings, he breached his bail in June 2012 to seek asylum from Ecuador. He was granted asylum by Ecuador in August 2012 and remained in the Embassy of Ecuador in London for seven years. Assange has held Ecuadorian citizenship since 12 December 2017. However, since 13 April 2019, his Ecuadorian citizenship has been suspended.

Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for «fair use» for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Fair use is a use permitted by copyright statute that might otherwise be infringing. Non-profit, educational or personal use tips the balance in favour of «fair use». The recent amendments to the Copyright Act of 1976 pertain to music. «Fair use» remains in force for film and video "For the purpose of criticism, education, news reporting"
