そもそもマーラーの『巨人』を聞きながら黒澤監督は『乱』の脚本を書いた。予告編にも使用した。だから監督にとっては自然な工程だったはず。しかし作曲家武満徹はそのやり方に激怒した。仮の音楽を付けた編集プリントは全スタッフに試写されたからだ。スタッフ試写は何度も行われた。試写のたびに絵の差し替えが繰り返された。試行錯誤の編集作業。だが、マーラーの曲はそのまま使用され続けた。
