HMS Surprise: Then and Now (Master and Commander)

In 2001-2003, the HMS Rose replica was converted into the HMS Surprise, to be used in the movie, “Master and Commander: Far Side of the World,” starring Russell Crowe. After the movie production, the ship was sold to Maritime Museum of San Diego. In this video you will see the ship then sailing the open sea off the coast of San Diego, November 2010 . 2010 was the most recent time the Surprise sailed the open sea. Finally, now in 2020, Surprise is in need of renovations, to get it back into good shape. You’ll meet some of the dedicated crew explaining the process of renovating the ship.
Update Spring 2021: Restoration of the ship is now complete. Be sure and visit if you are in the San Diego area.
